Active Pause is about the simple, down-to-earth ways in which we step out of “automatic pilot” to be more actively involved in what we do. In other words, we see “mindful” as “engaged” – – the opposite of being disengaged, of doing a task mindlessly.
So, one of the things you will see over time in our newsletter, is people sharing specific approaches and experiences. The key word here is “experience”: This is not dogma, this is what people actually do, and how it works for them. This is an invitation for you to experiment with it, and to adapt it to your needs.
In this spirit, Linda Ciotola is sharing the approach to mindful eating that she practices and teaches.
There is an audio conversation with her, together with a printable PDF transcript, at:  http://blog.activepause.com/2017/01/ciotola-mindful-eating/
Linda has also prepared a “self coach tool” about mindful eating, also a printable PDF, that you can find at:  http://activepause.com/zug/selfcoachtools/Ciotola-Mindful-Eating.pdf
Linda Ciotola is a Certified TEP (trainer-educator-practitioner of psychodrama) and the co-author of a book on healing eating disorders.

Please share your feedback about this, as well as comments and suggestions about Active Pause, as a reply to this email or through the Facebook group: http://facebook.activepause.com

People who have experienced traumatic events can have significant changes in the neurobiology of their brain. The right brain holds emotions, relationship information, and unprocessed trauma, often in the form of flashbacks, body memories, intrusive thoughts and dissociated feelings. It is always turned on by an overactive amygdala. The left brain’s coherent function, which provides meaning to stay in the here and now, is interrupted by stress hormones as the result of danger signals from the amygdala.

Participants will learn to use the Body Double (BD) intervention to work with the energetic body and the ‘rhythmic rupture’ it suffers, along with the physical body and the brain, due to traumatic events. The brain-in-action, along with attachment structures, are taught through demonstration and live supervised practice and can be used immediately following the workshop in individual, couples and family therapy, as well as by educators and community organizers. This workshop expands the repertoire of students and practitioners of EMDR, EFT, sensory motor integration, as well as drama therapy and psychodrama.

Brain & Trauma Training 3-2017

THIS WORKSHOP OFFERS a framework for avoiding compassion fatigue, boosting resilience and promoting wellness. The core skills of Awareness, Balance, Connection (Saavkitne & Pearlman, 1996) and Self-Compassion (Neff, 2013) are explored in theory and in action. In addition to full psychodramas, brief action structures and theoretical processing, this workshop offers optional yoga, yoga nidra and massage so participants can practice selfcare during the four-day experience.

Over her 30+ year professional life, Cathy Nugent has held the vision to offer opportunities for dramatic transformations—deep healing, powerful learning and high-level wellness leading to more enriched and fulfilled lives. For this workshop, Cathy is joined by her long-time friend and colleague Linda Ciotola. Recipient of the 2008 Zerka T. Moreno Award, Linda is a highly experienced and creative psychodramatist with special expertise in holistic health and self-care practices.

4 Day Non Residential Workshop June 2017

Research on Mindfulness , neurobiology, and stress reduction is showing the power of mindfulness to actually help re-wire the brain (thanks to neuroplasticity). However, trauma survivors (and anyone under stress) will have difficulty meditating, being mindful, and connecting to the part of the self that can do this. This is where action methods come in!
By “role training” clients in the “Mindful Witness Role”, step by step, they can learn to practice this role, enabling them to use it as needed. Over time, this practice will re-wire the brain and reduce trauma symptoms.

Sexuality—Wilhelm Reich’s revolutionary ideas about the implicit freedom in human sexuality were a force in the social change of the last 50 years. Taking off from the premises of psychoanalytic thinking of the time, he, and following him Al Lowen, propounded a theory of sexuality as a central expression of each person’s uniqueness. They saw sexuality as the primal force that when given full expression broke through the life-limiting conventions of social repression.

Since that time of heady revolutionary fervor in the promotion of a sex-positive perspective in psychotherapy and in society, we have added much to our understanding of the complexity of human sexuality. Adding in concepts from attachment theory, from gender-studies, from modern theories about relationships we have broadened and deepened our view of the functions and characteristics of sexuality. In Modern Bioenergetics we see the deep connection of pleasure and benevolence in the lived experience of sexuality. In this workshop we will explore these new perspectives from philosophical, theoretical and clinical perspectives. The workshop will have didactic, experiential and clinical demonstration/discussion components. It is suitable for clinicians with experience in a somatopsychic psychotherapy modality, and those wishing to know more about this approach.

Sexuality—Wilhelm Reich and Alexander Lowen saw human sexuality as the essential and irreducible expression of human fulfillment and freedom. Finding the vital flow of passion and self-expression in one’s sexuality were the bedrock experiences of the realized self. In the many years since the first, revolutionary, propositions in Bioenergetic Analysis, we have added many layers of complexity and both broadened and deepened our understanding of human sexuality and its expression. This seminar will trace the development of this force in somatopsychic psychotherapy theory and practice.

Hello Friends,

On behalf of one of our students we are passing along an opportunity for members of our community to participate in a research study. Details follow.

Call for Participants in a Research Study: The Somatic Path to Post Traumatic Growth
Contact: Sweigh Emily Spilkin, exs9149@ego.thechicagoschool.edu

Purpose of the Study: Trauma brings us face-to-face with some of the most fundamental questions at the heart of the human journey. It often carries with it emotional pain, nervous system dysregulation, and a grappling for meaning. But trauma also carries the potential for growth, spiritual expansion, and a fuller experience of being human—what is known as Post Traumatic Growth (PTG).

As of now, the primary theory about how PTG develops assumes that PTG is a cognitive process, and that growth occurs as old belief systems are shattered by trauma and new ones form. No research has been done to date on the role that the nervous system plays in the development of PTG.

The purpose of this study is to begin to bridge the gap between positive psychology’s understanding of PTG and somatic psychology’s understanding of trauma. I will do this by interviewing somatic trauma therapists who have gone through a PTG experience to investigate whether or not nervous system regulation plays a role in PTG and if so, what that role is. Although this study focuses on the nervous system the research is interview based and no quantitative measures will be taken.

Eligibility for Participation: Participants must be over 25, somatically-trained trauma psychotherapists, and have undergone a significant growth experience as a result of trauma.

The focus of the interviews will be on the process of personal, emotional, and spiritual growth post-trauma. That said, it is important to note that participants will be asked to briefly discuss their experience with trauma during the interview.

Time Commitment: The study consists of two phases. Phase 1, a Skype screening survey will take approximately 30 minutes. Those who qualify to move on will be invited into Phase 2, a Skype interview that will take approximately 1-1.5 hours. Directly after the interview, participants will be invited to participate in a 10-20 minute debriefing conversation to integrate their experience in the study. Within a few weeks after the interview they will be contacted and given the opportunity to review their data (approximately 1 hours). The total estimated time for Phase 2 of the research is approximately 2-3 hours.

Location of the Research: Online

Name and Contact information: To participate in the study or if you have any questions, please email Sweigh Emily Spilkin, at exs9149@ego.thechicagoschool.edu with your name, where you are from, and the best way to contact you. I will then be in touch to ask you a few questions and to set up the preliminary screening interview. If you have any questions, you are also invited to call me at 720-771-4778.

Thank you for considering volunteering for this important research, and the opportunity to bridge the worlds of somatic and positive psychology and develop a more comprehensive theory about Post Traumatic Growth.

Tuscany, Italy – June 24-30, 2017

At a time when the world is being pulled apart by opposites, this retreat offers an opportunity to consult our inner compass. Here one can find re-orientation, strengthen inner authority, and nourish body and soul. Offering a sanctuary for centering, we will find renewal through natural movement, stillness, dream work, and guiding elements from Alchemy’s ancient wisdom, re-membering our deep humanity in the vital web of community.

How do we evoke the light in the dark body? How do we embody the soul spark, bring it to consciousness, and live it more fully in our daily lives? Authentic Movement and dreamwork allow access to these rich inner resources on a cellular level, reawakening our natural rhythms, instinctual wisdom, and the songs of the soul.

This international retreat will explore the impactful role of embodied experience in the healing process. Alchemy’s basic elements can deepen our understanding of embodied transformation, experienced spontaneously through the practice of Authentic Movement. Dreams carry treasures that enhance the meaning and depth of this spirited journey.

The Alchemists’ aim was to study nature and to learn from its profoundly regenerative capacities. So too, dreams reflect our inner landscape, our spiritual condition. This workshop engages dreams and Alchemy in relation to bodily experience in the process of healing and transformation through moving and witnessing practice.

We will draw from:

BodySoul® Work
Jungian Theory
Somatics
Dreaming
Drawing
Voice exploration
Writing

Studio sessions will be supplemented by seminars focusing on questions arising from your personal explorations, as well as applications relevant to your creative and professional work.

This retreat is designed for those with a depth of experience in Authentic Movement, welcoming healing practitioners, clinicians, educators, artists, and those interested in growth and matters of the spirit.

Nestled in Tuscany’s beautiful rolling hills and vineyards, the private retreat center offers a peaceful, inspiring setting for self-renewal. Walking trails, delicious Tuscan cooking and a swimming pool enhance the experience.

What is Integral Somatic Psychology (ISP)?

Integral Somatic Psychology (ISP) considers every approach to psychotherapy as valuable and understands them all as components of a broad unifying framework built on Eastern and Western psychologies. It offers clinicians from diverse therapeutic modalities the possibility of increasing treatment efficiency through greater embodiment of all levels of the psyche.

All human experiences (perceiving, thinking, feeling, remembering, imagining, evaluating, relating, and responding) arise from our individual gross (i.e. physical) and quantum level subtle (i.e. energy) bodies that are in constant interaction with the dynamic collective gross and subtle bodies contained in an absolute collective body of pure awareness. Though valuable, the focus on the brain and to a lesser extent on the individual gross (physical) body as the beginning and end of all of our experiences has severely limited Western psychology’s comprehension of the larger domain in which human experiences originate; and has greatly diminished its ability to help those in need. Regardless of the psychotherapy approach we use in our practice, we can help our clients better with their cognitive, emotional, behavioral, relational, as well as somatic and spiritual difficulties, if we know more of the following:

a) how the three layers of the individual gross body, the five layers of the individual subtle body, the dynamic collective gross and subtle bodies, and the absolute collective body of pure awareness interact with each other to generate our experiences;
b) how the individual gross and subtle bodies can get dysregulated from difficult experiences and become disconnected from each other and from the three collective bodies and become symptomatic in many ways; and
c) how to make the individual gross and subtle bodies more available, regulated, balanced, and in better relationship with each other and with the three collective bodies while we work with our clients psychologically.

The value of ISP will be demonstrated especially through topics of current clinical interest: attachment, affect regulation, stress, and trauma.
Who can benefit the most from this training?

Because it is a professional master training for experienced clinicians, the prerequisites for admission are high:

a) an active professional practice in psychotherapy, bodywork, energywork, or education of individuals or groups, work that involves psychological processing,
and
b) an adequate somatic background such as participation in the Somatic Experiencing (SE) training or equivalent training and personal knowledge of the body (determined on an individual basis).

ISP will prove to be of considerable value to you whether you are trained in a mainstream psychoanalytic or psychotherapy approach, a body-oriented psychotherapy approach (such as Bioenergetics or Sensori-Motor Psychotherapy), or a bodywork modality such as Polarity Therapy or Cranio-Sacral Therapy, or an energywork school, as long as your work also involves psychological processing.

What is taught in the training?

General principles derived from a variety of disciplines including neuroscience and quantum physics for integrating all the bodies into any psychological approach, validated empirically in multiple clinical settings and cultures.
It offers all those who work psychologically a sophisticated body of knowledge to further increase the embodiment of body, energy, and consciousness dimensions in their work without having to change their prior clinical orientations or adopt interventions outside the norms of their professional practice. The role of body, energy, and consciousness in generating or disrupting psychological experiences in general and facilitating or hampering self and interactive regulation in particular is taught through applications in areas of widespread current clinical interest: affect regulation, attachment, stress, and trauma.

ISP offers considerable flexibility and choice in the tools used, such as awareness, movement, breath, sound, imagery, inter-personal resonance, self touch, and other touch, as appropriate to the clinical setting of the trainee.

Mind and body health are talked about everywhere – in the media, on TV, on the web, among friends…

But even with all this information at our fingertips, why do so many of us continue to live life filled with anxiety, stress, depression, conflictual relationships, compulsive behaviors and all sorts of addictions?

• Do you know how to release unwanted tension and create freely flowing energy in your body?
• Are your relationships filled with anger, frustration, neediness, avoidance or boredom?
• Do you believe that your body, mind and spirit are connected and affect each other?
• Are you curious about what you might learn from a groups of body oriented therapists?
• As a therapist yourself, would you like to expand your knowledge and learn new techniques?

Even if you, yourself, are a healthcare provider – a nurse, teacher, psychotherapist, medical professional, researcher, health and wellness coach – your own body, mind and spirit alignment may be something you have never really spent the time to look at. And you may be surprised at what you will discover if you let down your guard and open your mind to a new way of thinking and being in your body and in the world.

Healing Retreat

Is There Something That You Want to Heal ?

Join us for this uplifting and healing experiential weekend that helps you release traumas so you are able to live a fully engaged, feeling, thoughtful life. The weekend begins with naming what you would like to change in your life.

Over the course of the 3 days we will work together, utilizing the wisdom of the body and the power of the collective to release and shift these limitations and enhance our capacity to live a vibrant, joyful life – bringing us to a re-membering of ourselves.

Thurs afternoon, Nov. 3rd beginning at 4pm til Sunday, Nov. 6th, noon

Details: The retreat (3 nights and 4 days) opens at 4pm on Thursday, Nov. 3 in Truro, MA, at a beautiful house on the beach, with a Healing Circle, followed by a group dinner, which is included.

Format: there will be two Healing Circles per day, one in the morning and a second at some time later in the afternoon/evening with free time to explore the local area.

There will be a closing circle on our final morning, Sunday, Nov. 6th, before departure at noon.

Structure: The Healing Retreat opens on Day 1 with participants gathering in a circle to discover and share our intentions for healing and growth. The basic premise for these gatherings is a safe space to explore our suffering from something that couldn’t be handled. One of our purposes in life is to master these trauma. In fact, what we suffer about, on a deeper level, is an invitation to remembering and being in a different relationship with what couldn’t be handled.

What’s included: a room with an ocean view, with up to 8 participants (several more if couples share a bed), dinner the first evening, breakfast and lunch supplies, and 6 HEALING CIRCLES. While dinners are on our own (except for the first evening), we have discovered that many people choose to cook together while others find restaurants in the area.

Location: Truro, MA in a beautiful private home on Cape Cod

The Somatic Experiencing
® Trauma Institute Presents:   Basic Principles of Somatic Experiencing: Live and Online Workshops

This introductory SE workshop is designed for professionals who work with the effects of trauma including: social workers, mental and medical health professionals, body workers, first responders, educators, clergy, and other professionals in the healing arts. Participants will learn about the basic principles and theory of the SE model as well as more about the SE Professional Training. Somatic Experiencing® (SE™) psychobiological trauma resolution, developed Peter A. Levine, PhD, author of the bestseller, “Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma,” is a potent approach to resolving the symptoms of trauma and chronic stress. The SE approach offers a framework to assess where your client is “stuck” in the fight, flight, or freeze responses and provides clinical tools to resolve these fixated physiological states that underlie so many trauma symptoms. Our educational model is both theoretical and highly experiential, offering you effective skills for restoring nervous system regulation and resolving trauma that can be immediately integrated into your professional practice. The three-year SE™ Professional Training is a continuing education program that will help you make an even greater difference with your clients who suffer.

The Foundation for Human Enrichment, through the Somatic Experiencing® Trauma Institute is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the worldwide healing and prevention of trauma.

‘Moving Into Meaning’, by Al Pesso, is now available for download as a free PDF e-book, at: http://LifeSherpa.com/2016/08/pesso-chapter/.

Together with his wife, Diane Boyden-Pesso, Albert Pesso was the co-founder of PBSP (Pesso Boyden System Psychomotor), a widely respected interactive technique that helps clients create new memories to compensate for emotional deficits in the past. He was called one of the 3 living masters of body-based psychotherapy and was chosen in 2012 to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award by the U.S. Assoc. for Body Psychotherapy (USABP). Diane Boyden Pesso died on March 4, 2016. Al died soon thereafter on May 19, 2016.

‘Moving Into Meaning’ is Al Pesso’s chapter for ‘What Sustains Me’. It is a collaborative book. Each chapter is written by a different author, stands on its own, and is released independently. When all chapters are ready, the book will be published as a regular book as well as an e-book.

The central question in this project is:

What sustains you?

More specifically: What gives you a sense of peace, meaning and purpose in everyday life? What keeps you going when times are tough? What gives you the strength to face moments of crisis or despair?

The book’s topic could be described as an ‘existential quest’ or a ‘spiritual quest’. We are consciously avoiding these phrases because they can be misleading. For instance, ‘spiritual quest’ often conveys the sense of a search for outside resources, beyond the realm of the physical world. Such a definition would exclude experiences that involve inner resources.

Our focus is on describing what we experience, as opposed to the philosophical or religious terms under which these experiences are usually framed. We are not describing a specific path, a ‘right way’ to do things, or a ‘correct’ narrative of how it all works out. To the contrary, we are coming at it from different approaches and belief systems, including agnostic and atheist perspectives.

A key characteristic of this project is that each author is writing in a personal and experiential manner. The key word here is ‘experience’. We hope that, by talking in terms of experiences rather than beliefs, we can find a bridge whereby people who come from different traditions or beliefs can be nourished by each other’s experiences.

What Sustains Me is a project of LifeSherpa, a nonprofit social enterprise that fosters everyday mindfulness as creative interaction with life. You can follow the progress of this project, and our other projects, at http://LifeSherpa.com

This is in honor of Eugene Gendlin receiving USABP’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the USABP conference, in July.

Focusing is not a rigid approach. It encourages therapists to blend in their own personal perspectives and creativity. Throughout his life, Eugene Gendlin has encouraged people to find their own path. So it is a fitting tribute that this page reflects the breadth and depth of the approaches he has inspired. The following are conversations with a number of Focusing-Oriented Therapists.

We are returning from our international teachings and look forward
to sharing our deep transformational work with you
at the world-renowned and magical setting of Esalen, Big Sur, California.

(Accommodation space is filling quickly, so please contact Esalen to register.)

This workshop is for individuals and couples. The work in Core Evolution® explores how the aspects of body, emotion, mind, consciousness interact with each other. The experience of love unifies all these aspects. A person in love and sexual harmony communicates and creates from a place of well-being, peace, joy, and a sense of fulfillment.

Participants will learn how to identify and differentiate the nature and main elements of love, sexuality, and relationship, and their intention, motivation, needs, and wants in their relationship with themselves and others. We will also discover the nature of triggers, causes of unhappiness, and also the possibility for change.

Cornelia and Siegmar create a safe space to look at important topics in life, while offering dynamic exploration, creative movement, and expression and mindful centering.
