Are you curious about ways to use mindfulness with your clients? Do you want more tools for including the body in therapy? Have you heard about Hakomi but haven’t had a chance to try it out?

Mindfulness, experiential exercises, and the body-mind connection offer direct access routes to clients’ unconscious material. Instead of just talking about things, clients experience them directly and therefore gain deeper insight as well as tools for change. This type of work creates aliveness and creativity for therapist and client alike.

This workshop is an opportunity to learn the basic skills of Hakomi, a method that has been utilizing mindfulness and the body for over thirty years.

In this workshop, you will learn:

Tracking and contacting: How to track and use somatic cues like tone of voice, gestures, facial expressions and body posture to access unconscious material
Mindfulness: How to assist clients to shift into a quiet, grounded state of consciousness that helps them to deepen their awareness and explore inner material that’s not easily accessible through other methods
Accessing: Steps for discovering the core issues that underlie your clients’ challenges
This is a hands-on workshop; you’ll have an opportunity to practice the skills you’re learning in a gentle and safe environment.

Through lecture, demonstration and experiential exercises we will discover what habitually limits us deep inside and how to move beyond it. Traumatic events can leave physiological and emotional scars that alter neurological structures and functions, which in turn can inhibit our progress on the path of awakening. In this class series, we will develop a body of skills that we can use to recognize and reduce the painful effects of trauma and thereby free up energy for meditation. Together, we will explore healing practices to help bring deeper meaning, connection, and freedom to our lives and practice.

This 5-week class is designed for meditators who have encountered barriers in their meditative experience and are unsure as to why.

Both new and experienced meditators are welcome.

Teachings are appropriate for the general public as well as health care professionals. Health care professionals will be able to incorporate the tools and practices offered in this class series when working with clients. See below for more information, including attendance requirements.

With Judith Blackstone, PhD
Part one: February 16-20, 2018; Part two: April 6-10, 2018

The Realization Process is an embodied approach to psychological and relational healing and nondual awakening. In this approach, the radical openness of nondual realization is based on deep contact with the internal space of one’s body. In this way, we discover an authentic, quality-rich experience of our individual being at the same time as we transcend our individuality. The Realization Process includes a powerful, precise method for recognizing and releasing psychologically based constrictions from the body.

Judith will teach the main Realization Process practices and their application for psychological health and maturity, including how they can help us cultivate resilience to emotional and sensory stimuli, integrate awareness, emotion and sensation, and experience deep connection with other people without losing inward contact with ourselves. She will also discuss how we create and bind constrictions in our body and teach the Realization Process release technique.

This introduction to HAKOMI MINDFUL SOMATIC PSYCHOLOGY is based on the notion that everyone with a conscience has an Inner Critic. This part of ourselves was formed in the psyche during childhood and it is trying to help us in our adult lives. Sometimes however, the Inner Critic becomes obstinate and overly critical especially of other Child Parts of the psyche. In this workshop we will utilize the Following Hakomi Principles to acknowledge, understand and hold compassion for the Inner Critic and the Wisdom of the Inner Child.

In this hands-on training, you will:

Find creative ways to work with the body that are gentle and effective
Learn to work experientially using gesture, posture, impulse, sensation, and touch
Begin to translate the language of the body into words, images and memories

This workshop introduces participants to the basic principles and skills of the Hakomi Method to support personal and professional development. The goal of Hakomi is to uncover and alter unconscious motivations, beliefs and outdated frames of reference that negatively affect mood and relationships with self and others. The method uses experiments conducted in mindfulness and body awareness to gather information about unconscious processes. These techniques, coupled with the attuned presence of the therapist, access implicit memories and gently reorganize entrenched neural patterns.

In this workshop, you will: Learn how to turn awareness inward for self-study, and how mindfulness can infuse this exploration with a sense of curiosity and compassion. Explore ways the body archives experience and expresses our deepest beliefs about life. Practice using mindful experiments and the body to identify and eventually transform unconscious, limiting core beliefs.

Introductory Workshops

Do you or your clients get overwhelmed too often by anxiety or fear?
Does anxiety choke off impulses to speak up or take action?
Would you like to discover a way to work with anxious feelings so that they release their grip?

You probably already know from experience that squelching unwanted feelings doesn’t work for long, right? And sometimes feelings go head to head in conflict, such as the feeling of anxiety and the wanting-to-be-rid-of-the-anxiety.

In this class, we use principles of the body-based method called Focusing to explore and practice techniques for relating to feelings differently, without being taken over by them. If feelings are messengers, they will release their grip when the message has been delivered – and the message will almost certainly not be exactly what you thought it was!
There will be a mix of ideas and experiential exercises, with opportunities for discussion.

Being in pain can feel like being between a rock and a hard place.
The Rock: I am in pain. The Hard Place: I want it to stop.

Is the struggle with pain a daily reality for you? Or for any of your clients?

Does pain ever feel like a punishment or a burden?
Is physical (or emotional) pain simply too much sometimes?

Pain and the struggle to not be in pain can dominate our daily reality. The thoughts: “What if this goes on forever?” and the feelings: worry, anxiety, depression, despair – compound the pain itself and sap our energy. Emotional pain can be as bad as physical pain, dragging us down and fogging our brains.

When our clients are in pain, it can be much harder to do the work of therapy.

Does it have to be that way? Wouldn’t it be great if our life energy and our unquenchable spirit could emerge, stronger than the pain? And if we could help our clients find that life energy and spirit? If we could find a way to do that, then in a real way even the pain would have a gift in it.

What You’ll Learn:

  • How to stop fighting with pain
  • How to use body awareness to track physical symptoms and monitor what kind of help and support is needed
  • The problem with the word “pain” and how the language we use can change our internal experience
  • How to give emotional (or physical) pain the space it needs to change without being forced
  • How to get in touch with the resources you really have that have been masked by the pain
  • Discover the Focusing-oriented way to work with pain. Learn it for yourself and explore how it might be useful for your clients.

3 Tuesdays; 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM Pacific Time
Taught by Ann Weiser Cornell. Live Online Course

Focusing is a powerful process that can shift emotional stuckness into ease and balance. But it’s not always clear how Focusing can be of direct help when we’re confronted with the struggles of daily life.

The Urge to Indulge

When: July 25, 2017, 11:00AM – 12:30PM Pacific Time
Cost: $39 until July 19th, $49 after

A message about this webinar from Ann Weiser Cornell:

“Why did I eat that cookie?” “Why did I take that third glass of wine?” “Why did I stay online so long and get to bed so late?”

Despite careful plans and good intentions, the urge to indulge can hijack us into doing something that we are sorry for later. For me, it’s usually when I am tired, at the end of a long day, that I can’t resist that bag of potato chips. I eat it all – and then instead of feeling good, I feel angry at myself for “pigging out” – and despairing of this habit ever changing.

But that doesn’t happen as often as it used to. Now I know some ways to stay present when the temptation to soothe myself with old unhealthy habits comes up. More often than not, I now choose to do some knitting – or some Focusing – instead of eating the chips. I’ve learned how to sense in my body for what needs soothing and care – and what kind of soothing it really needs.

And most amazing of all, I have learned to do this without activating an inner critical voice to scold me or make me feel bad… which I know just makes things worse.

In this seminar on Focusing in Daily Life, I will show you how to move into a new relationship with the part of you that reaches for the cookie and the part of you that makes you feel bad for doing it. You’ll come away with powerful and practical moves you can use immediately to give yourself genuine care and soothing instead of getting carried away by old habits.

This workshop will provide an experiential overview of Hakomi Mindful Somatic Psychotherapy.    It is designed to offer in depth skills of assessment and intervention using present-moment experience in elegant and gentle ways to approach and transform core material. The Hakomi Method illuminates how we organize and embody core beliefs at the most fundamental levels of our experience. Through a combination of the awareness that mindfulness offers, the wisdom held in the body, and the safety of the therapeutic relationship, core issues can be explored.

In this workshop, designed for therapists and other healing professionals, we will engage in a number of practices that elucidate the Hakomi Method, and provide immediately applicable skills for working experientially with clients in creative and heartfelt ways. Through talk and discussion, live demonstrations, internal exercises, and experiential practice we will develop Hakomi therapeutic skills. See the Esalen website for more details:   CLICK HERE

Hakomi integrates mindfulness and somatics into the psychotherapy process with uniquely effective results:
The dynamic use of mindfulness is a foundation of the Hakomi Method. When introduced with Hakomi techniques, it creates a rapid, experiential access route to the unconscious “blueprints” and implicit memories which invisibly shape our lives. When unconscious, this material creates projections, conflict and disharmony in our relationships and self-perceptions. Once conscious and directly experienced, it is available for transformation and the healing of attachment issues.

Hakomi Mindful Somatic Psychotherapy is an elegant and highly effective form of body centered therapy designed to support self-discovery through experiments done in mindfulness. The goal is the discovery and transformation of unconscious motivations, beliefs, and outdated “blueprints” that are causing unnecessary suffering. Hakomi is based in the creation of a safe, non-judgmental atmosphere, where therapists extend a loving attitude to help guide clients’ attention to their whole being, not just their thoughts. The warmth, presence, flexibility, and intelligence of the therapist create the foundation for this life-changing work.

This workshop is for body workers, counselors, psychotherapists, marriage and family therapists, social workers, clergy, physicians, spiritual leaders, healers and other helping professionals. It will introduce you to the basic principles and skills of the Hakomi Method as presented by Hakomi Institute. As a body centered approach, Hakomi can serve as an excellent companion to massage therapy and bodywork. This training teaches the main Realization Process practices along with specific practices for applying foundational consciousness to psychological and relational healing. The Realization Process approaches recovery from trauma in two ways: by directly facilitating body-mind integration through inhabiting the internal space of the body, and through practices that, along with verbal dialogue and insight, release the trauma-based constrictions in the fascia that obstruct our ability to inhabit our body.

The training also teaches how to sit with another person while attuned to foundational consciousness, how to discern subtle protective organizations within a person’s body, and to track the changes that occur within the internal space of one’s own and the other person’s body during a therapeutic session.

In the Realization Process, accessing and knowing ourselves as foundational consciousness is understood to be crucial for psychological health. Trauma disrupts our internal cohesion, either through the intensity if its impact, or through the constrictions that we ourselves create to protect against it. Uncovering the primary unified ground of ourselves can help recover us from trauma. It heals both the fragmentations within our individual being and the fragmentations between our internal experience and our experience of the world around us.

Foundational consciousness is experienced as stillness, within which all of the content of our experience—our thoughts, emotions, sensations, and perceptions—flow. As foundational consciousness, we can remain open to the unobstructed flow of experience without losing our underlying wholeness and stability. We gain a sense of both our own authenticity, of becoming who we really are, and of spontaneity, of being able to respond to life without fear of overwhelm or annihilation.

A certificate is awarded at the completion of the training, authorizing you to use the Realization Process Spiritual Psychotherapy practices professionally.

Taught by Judith Blackstone.

Format: 2 (two) five-day modules with required practice sessions between modules.

This training teaches the main Realization Process practices along with specific practices for awakening and moving through foundational consciousness in the whole body. As this core dimension of ourselves, we move with our whole being. We become both empty and present at the same time.

These practices deepen and integrate our capacities for understanding, emotional reponsiveness and physical sensation. They cultivate balance, fluidity, vitality, openness and self-contact.

A certificate is awarded at the completion of the training, authorizing you to teach the Realization Process Embodiment practices.

Format: two five-day modules.
Dates: November 10-14, 2017; May 4-8, 2018

This training teaches the main Realization Process practices for embodied nondual awakening. When we inhabit our body as a whole, we uncover a subtle, unified experience of foundational consciousness pervading our body and environment at the same time. This is experienced as the authentic ground of our individual being, and the basis of our oneness with our surroundings, and with other people. This means that we can know ourselves and mature as individuals, at the same time as we transcend our individuality.

A certificate is awarded at the completion of the training authorizing you to teach the Realization Process practices.

The training is taught by Judith Blackstone, the founder of the Realization Process.

The more we care about each other, the more vulnerable we are to shame. Intentionally or unintentionally, we poke each other in the tender spots. Couples can shame each other multiple times a day, often without realizing what is happening. This can become a highly reactive cycle, preventing both people from getting their basic safety and attachment needs met. And shame can distort how we hear each other; the received message may have little to do with the message the partner is attempting to send.

In this workshop we will explore the blame/shame game couples can fall into and learn how to help them stop shaming each other and work together to create a secure base and heal the wounds of the past.

We will:
– Look at some of the many subtle ways shame can be triggered.
– Explore shaming moments with great care so we can teach our clients how to avoid shame-based reactivity.
– Learn the gentle art of counter-shaming and how to help a partner with his or her feelings of inadequacy.
– Help a person give back shame to the original source with their partner’s full support.

If we can free the energy that has been stuck in blame and shame, couples can increase their vitality, joy and intimacy.
